Cathay Hailam Kopitiam 新国泰
About This Spot
Stepping into Cathay Hailam Kopitiam in Port Klang is like stepping into a slice of local history gently stirred with the hum of everyday life. Nestled beneath the soaring flyover of Jalan Kem, this unassuming corner carries a quiet charm shaped by decades of familiar faces—sailors hauling stories from the nearby port, families seeking comforting plates, and regulars lured by memories of enduring flavours.
The pace here is unhurried and warm, the air filled with the inviting aroma of charcoal-toasted bread and rich coffee brewing the way it has for generations. It’s a place where the past and present mingle softly—a kopitiam that pairs simple, honest dishes with a shared sense of belonging. The intimate clatter from the kitchen and the steady flow of chatter create a cozy rhythm, welcoming both the early risers craving their morning roti bakar and the afternoon crowd drawn by the savory allure of Hainanese chicken chop.
What you’ll find here is comfort served with care—dishes that blur the edges between Chinese heritage and colonial influences, like a loving culinary handshake between East and West. The flavors are familiar yet nuanced, with each spoonful evoking subtle reminders of long afternoons spent in similar towns and kitchen tables. From the lightly toasted bread slathered with butter and kaya, to noodles that carry a delicate balance of sweet and savory, every bite encourages slow enjoyment and quiet conversations.
Despite its simple setting, Cathay Hailam Kopitiam carries the gentle weight of tradition. It is the kind of place where people savor not just the food, but the time spent together—moments shared over mugs of robust coffee, plates passed across wooden tables, and the warm glow of a place that feels like an extension of home. It is less about fuss and more about the human moments that make a meal memorable.

We ordered the kangkung belacan, roti bakar with kaya and butter, chicken meat roll, Hainanese chicken chop and 2 plates of fried rice. Everything was amazing, the highlight being the kangkung belacan (and I'm usually not a fan of this). Our only issue with the place is that the fried rice took a while to arrive.

Being a #hainanese, I 'need' to check out this Hainanese kopitiam A 20 minutes #motorcycle ride, found the restaurant's location below a gigantic overhead flyover at Jalan Kem, Port Klang. A 84 years old foodie establishment, currently run by the 4th generation family people, the shoplot has the feeling of a coloured past, as it feeds locals and sailors alike, located near South Port. Tried the Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM13.00) and the Kopi Butter (RM4.50) really looks cool with a chunk of butter floating on the coffee I will return to try the rest of the food and drinks offered on the menu, while it's still around

One of the best chicken chop with extra shockalingam, Yummylicious and slurpylicious sauce, roti bakar toasted on charcoal stove spread with a generous amount of SCS butter and home made kaya, and an excellent mug of coffee. Will make you salivate like you have never salivated before. Definitely worth savouring with family and friends.

Not a fancy place but an old school kopitiam. I enjoyed their cham and hainanese chicken chop. The sauce has subtle tomato taste and it was a simple comforting taste with the fried chicken chop. The Kaya butter toast is alright.. minimal Kaya in it.

This is one Hailam Kopitiam that needs no introduction. Queueing to have a seat is very common in this eatery. Like its namesake, the must go-for dish is the Hailam (Hainanese) Chicken Chop. This dish is a specialty of the Hainanese, created during the British era; essentially a fusion of East-Meets-West concept with a sweet savoury taste. The Hailam Mee is also another must try. The Mee (noodles) is covered in a dark, glossy sauce which emanates a rich, camarelised sweet taste. Pair this with pickled green chillies and what you get is an explosive flavour of sweetness with a sharp vinegary crunch covering every strand of noodle. And for the final oomph! ……. the very unique Kopi Gu You or better known as Hainanese Butter Coffee. Not something you find in your everyday kopi tiams. Watch the marbled effect as the butter melts on top of the coffee. The butter also cuts into the bitter notes of the coffee and the sweetness of condensed milk. This mish mash of flavours is definitely something worth experiencing. Apart from the food, you also get to see people from all walks of life enjoying their meals with friends and family. A truly Muhibbah kopitiam – established since 1941.
